A Positively Golden Smoothie

A week ago, I turned 23.  A week ago, I spent my birthday night at home, alone.

Now, this post is not meant to be a self-pitying rant. No. It is meant to be a lesson on perspective. Because for a half a minute, I let myself wallow in a situation that did not call for wallowing.

On Wallowing: There I was, miles away from close family and friends, getting older all alone. Though festivities would ensue the next day with my NYC friends, I couldn’t help but think for a moment in my solo birthday stupor–is this it? After all these years, have I really amounted to the girl who spends her birthday night alone in her bed balancing her misery with a pint of triple chocolate chunk ice cream (example used for dramatic effect only)?

On Not Wallowing: But really, it was impossible to feel any negative emotions for more than a half a minute that day. So maybe I was physically alone for a couple of hours (and who says there’s anything wrong with that, anyway), but did I mention how my co-worker drug me halfway across the city to hunt down her favorite cupcakes on our lunch break at work? Or how I arrived home to an enormous package from my parents sitting on my doorstep that likely took as many hours to put together as it did dollars to ship? Or that my brother called me from a mountaintop to send his wishes? (Literally.) (Typical.)  Between these moments and all the other well wishes people sent my way that day, I had no choice but celebrate every moment of that day, no matter where I was, or who I was with.

All it takes turn any potentially negative situation into a positive one is your own decision to do to. And why wallow when we could instead be smiling?

Why not start every day off bright, sunny, and golden? Why not start today off beautifully with this healthy, tasty golden smoothie?

 

 

Golden Smoothie

Makes 1-2 servings

Ingredients

1 mango, peeled and chopped

1 chopped, frozen banana

1/2-1 cup milk  or juice of your choice–I used OJ (less if you like thick smoothies, more if you like thin)

2 tablespoons golden flax seed meal

6 medium ice cubes

Directions

Place all ingredients in blender, and blend until smooth. Smile. (If you don’t have a high-powered blender, first blend frozen banana, ice and milk, and then add the softer ingredients.)

    Oops, Julia’s 100th birthday was on the 13th. Google had delayed their tribute, it seems, because of the Olympics.
